Babies are not mini-adults. Babies do not understand, "Oh, I'm crying and no one is helping me, therefore I have to help myself." Their cognitive abilities are not that advanced. What babies learn when they cry and no one helps them is that they cannot trust that when they call for help, that someone will respond. You are teaching them that their voice means nothing and that they are powerless. You are literally mass-producing insecurity. Certainly, not independence.
Independence is built on a foundation of confidence and stability. You want independent children and young adults who seek solutions to their own problems--then help them build trust and confidence in the world and in themselves--when they are infants.
